TheFlyer3ChairmansChatWearenowintoMarchandthenewracingseasonlikespringisstarting.YouhavejustdaysleftnowtothinkaboutgettingthecarreadybeforeyouwillactuallyneedtoputonyouroverallsandstartfettlingitOnamoreseriousnotethoseofyouwhohaveyettore-jointheclubandgetyourentriesinforSilverstonehadbettergetcrackingTheclockistickingdownfast.YourearlyentrieswillbemuchappreciatedsotheclubandtheBARCcangaugenumbers.AnddontforgetthiswillbeliveontelevisionOnalessurgentnotetheAwardsDinnerandDancehadagreatturnoutandIamverygratefultoMikeWildsforundertakingguestspeakerdutiesrecountingsomeofhisfavouritestoriesfromwhatIwouldcertainlyclassifyasoneofthegoldenerasofFormula1.IwouldalsoliketothankalltheattendeeswhogavesogenerouslytothecollectionforthemarshalsfundWehopetomakethepresentationatSilverstone.TheclubisinastrongpositiontobuildonthesuccessesoflastyearwithanewPre2003ChampionshiptheadditionoftheHistoricClasstoClassicThunderandmostrecentlytheadditionofaedglingVolkswagenChallenge.The2015seasonissettostartonahighwithour40thanniversaryracemeetingtakingplaceatthesamevenueandtimeofyearastheinauguralracebackin1975.Peasecomeandsupportyourclubaswenotonlylookbackover40yearsoffunandhardworkbutwelooktomanymoreyearsaheadwithgrowingcondence.IwritethesewordsjustbeforeIheadofftoRaceRetrotospendtimemanningourstandcontinuingtospreadthewordaboutwhatagreatclubthisisNotonlywithwhichtoracebutalsoofwhichtobeapart.ThereasonforthatisyouThemembersandsodragalongyourfriendsandencouragethemtobringouttheircarsandletshaveaSafefun-packedseason.JustliketheintrepidbunchthatkickedthingsoffatSilverstoneinMarch1975.CompetitionSecretarysNotesYouhaveprobablyheardmesaybeforethattheworkofthecommitteeandtheCompetitionSecretaryinparticularhardlyeasesduringtheoff-seasonandsoithasprovedagainthisyearwiththecountdowntotherstmeetingnowindaysnotmonths.ButbeforewegettothatpointIwouldliketothankallthosewhotookpartlastseasonon-trackinthepaddockorsupportinginsomewaygenerally.OverallIthinktheracingstandardswereexcellentandtheveryfewexceptionsarebeingdealtwith.HoweverIwasverydisappointedwiththeeventualresponsetotheSpameeting.Muchwasexpectedofitafteranunbelievableresponsewhenthemeetingwasrstannounced.AnywaymythankstothosewhodidmakethetripforafantasticweekendwhichenjoyedthenotoriousArdennesweatherconditionsbrilliantsunshinebathingthetrackontheopeningdaysandthentorrentialraintryingtowashusallawayonSunday.Nowwemoveintoanewyear.Thisisacrucialyearforourclubandwearemakingsomechangesnowwhicharevitaltoourfuturesuccess.IamnolongerabletodoitallandwillbeactingsolelyasCompetitionSecretarywiththevariousChampionshipRepresentativesreportingtomeasIcannotdealwithsolargeanumberofindividualdriversandrunmyownbusinesstoo.AcompromiseisbeingachievedbysplittingtheworkbetweenourcurrentvolunteersandIhopemorenewblood.IneffectwearedeningrolesmoreclearlytobecomemoreeffectiveandalsogivemetimetodevelopourClubatatimeofever-increasingcostandcompetition.Yoursupportisessentialtomeandourfuture.Idobelievethatnowisthetimegomorecommercialandbuy-intheexpertiseweneedinvariousareas.BelievemeIamnotgoingtobebiddingtobeincludedinthoseareasasitisimperativethatIinvestfarmoretimeinmybusiness.Asdiscussedatthe2014AGMandsubsequentlybycommitteealldecisionsregardingregulationchangesmustbediscussedwiththerelevantchampionshiprepresentativeandfellowdriversduringtheyear.RegulationswillnotbediscussedindetailatfutureAGMsassofewattendandhaverelevantinput.Thismustbeabetterwayofarrivingatimportantchanges.NowwemoveintothenewseasonwithnewchampionshipsandhopefullynewcompetitorsWenowhavethePre2003ChampionshipandtheClassicVWChallengeinourfold.IamgratefultoColinGibbonsandIanFowlerfortheworktheyhaveputintothose.AndwehopetoseemoreoftheAlfaRomeocompetitorfriendsjoiningourchampionshipsafterdiscussionswithAROCsDirectorofMotorSportRichardMurtha.InclosingandbeforeIgetawayforaholidayIjustwanttosaythankyouonceagaintoallwhohelpedtheclubonthesidelineslastyearbutespeciallyChrisBrightwhohasnallyrelinquishedtheMembershipSecretarydutiesaftermanythreats.Chrisdidfarmorethanjustthemembershipdutiesfortheclubandweowehimahugevoteofthanks.IamsureSoniahaseverythinginplacenowfromChrisandthechangewillbeassmoothaspossible.IlookforwardtoseeingyouallatSilverstoneinMarch.WithbestwishesaseverAndyJohnson.TonyPalmerChairman 4ClassicTouringCarRacingClubJohnNorringtonOurCompanySecretaryClubNewsJohnhashadalife-longpassionforeverythingonwheelsinheritedfromafatherwhoracedmotorbikesandhelpedhimstartracingat17inapre-warAstonMartinwhichherebuilt.Inthosedayspetrolwasjust4s6dagallonsohegenuinelyhassomeexperienceofournancialneedsandisanxioustohelpCTCRCbecomeevenbetterwhilehehasafewoutingsinanAlfaRomeoduringtheseason.Nowhavingheldacompetitionlicenceforsomethinglike50yearshestartedracingaboutthreeweeksafterhis17thbirthdayinaVSCCeventatSilverstone.HehasgoneontoracealmosteverythingfromFormulaFordtoanex-teamAstonMartinatLeMansmanymanyyearsago.MuchofhisracinghasbeeninEuropeandhehashadthegoodfortunetoraceonmostofEuropesclassiccircuitsincludingtheNordschleifeandSpa.Hisinvolvementwithcarclubsisalmostaslongasthattooandhehasheldseveralmanagementpositionsinotherclubsovermanyyears.HisworkinglifehasinvolvedseveralmanufacturersincludingLotusCarsinthedaysofACBCColinChapmanhimself.HerunshisowncompanyandnowstealsacoupleofdaysaweektoworkasaseniorARDSinstructorfortheUKslargesttrackdayorganiser.ThecarshowninthispaintingbyAndrewKitsonisbeingdrivenbyJohnatMulsanneCornerinthe1973LeMansCinquantenaire50thJubileerace.Itisthe1959DB4GTprototypewhichranatLeMansin1959withaSwissteam.ItsAMnamewasprojectDP199leadingontotheZagato-bodiedcarsDP212and214onthesamechassis.Itwastheveryrstofthe4sandwiththenew3.7litre6-cylindermotor.ItranatGoodwoodandwonwithacertainStirlingMossaboard.WhensoldbyAMitwasboughtbyTonyRuddandusedontheroadforsomeyears.ItwassoldtoJohnbyChrisStewartwhothenboughttheDBR1worldchampionshipcarinabout1970.JohnhaditforaboutsevenyearsandranitmainlywithAMOC.Itlastchangedhandsformorethan1maboutveyearsagoandisbeautifullypreservedbutnotnowraced.Ihadacoupleofphotosofitfrom73oneofwhichwasframedandonawallinmyofceexplainedJohn.AndyKitsonwasdeliveringapicturetomeformyson-in-lawandsawit.HelikeditandsaidIshouldsplashoutandsoIdid.Thatbecamea2012Xmaspresent.ThenlaterIsawanoriginal1959LeMansposterwhichshowedtheracestartandthecarwasinamongstthersthalfdozenorsothere.Ihadtobuyiteventhoughitwasmorethanthepaintingmemorabiliapricesbeingmad.Itwassothinandfragileithadtobemountedonlinentopreserveitbeforeframing.TheLexmarSudwasalittlegiantkillerbuiltbyJohnBrookatBridgeMotorsport.185bhpand700kgsonslicks.HerethirdonBrandsHatchGPcircuitinaEuropeanseriesAlfachampionshipracewhichJohnsetupinthelate90s.ThisGTV6wasbuildbyChrisSnowdonandafterbeingdriventotheNurburgringGPcircuitwonitsroadgoingclassintheDutchTrofeo.ItwaslovelyoldthingsaysJohnwhichIsadlywroteoffatDruidsatOultonParkinatwo-driverracewithChrisSnowdon.IhadjustequalledhistimeandwasgettingtooexcitedInfactthecarinfrontlostawheelandtookusbothoutatabout100mph.ItwassplitinhalfandarearwheellandedinthegravelatLodge.Iwasstunnedanddeaffor24hoursbuttheonlymarkswerewheretheharnessbruisedme.Areallybigunandthegodsweresmilingonmeforsure.Snowysaidyouwontdothatagain.HehopestousethisexperiencetohelpandworkwithusnowtodriveCTCRCforward. 6ClassicTouringCarRacingClubJanRodneyPearce10August194411February2015JanPearcewhopassedawayonthemorningofFebruary11wasoneoftheClassicSaloonCarClubsearliestmembers.HecompetedsuccessfullyintheveryrsteverClassicSaloonraceatSilverstoneinhisself-preparedMGMagnetteandwentontosupporttheclubateverycircuithomeandabroad.HesuccessfullynishedeveryeventheenteredwontheBestPreparedCarAwardwithhisimmaculateMagnetteandtookontheroleofPresidentguidingtheclubthroughsomechallengingtimesfrom19871990.JanwasborninGillinghamKentbuthisfatherwaspostedtoPoonainIndiaandsohisformativeyearswerespentlivinginthelastdaysoftheRajintheworldslargestdemocracy.BackinEnglandheexpectedtofollowhisfatherintotheRoyalNavyandheactuallywonascholarshiptotheRoyalNavalCollegeatDartmouthbuthisfatheradvisedhimtondoutwhathereallywantedtodoinlifeandthentodoitasahobbybutnotforaliving.AfteraweekatDartmouthJangaveuptheNavyandstudiedengineeringfortwoyearsbeforenallygoingtoworkforLloydsBankinLondon.Howeverheneverlosthislovefortheseaandhebecameanaccomplishedyachtsmanownedhisownboatsandevenpersuadedhislovelygirlstocrew.JantookupHistoricRallyingwithhisMagnetteandsubsequentlywithSamboaRoverP6andaSAAB.HecontinuedtoworkonanduseasuccessionofTRsandtookhisex-worksTR2PKV374backtoLeManstocelebratesits50thanniversaryandcompeteintheLeMansLegendsraceheldpriortotheactual24hourevent.JangraciouslylethiscarbedrivenatoutbytheformerTriumphex-worksdriverTonyDronandGinettaCupracerNickMarsh.From1982onwardshecompetedinseveralhighproleinternationalralliesincludingtheLombardGolden50theCoronationRallytheTargaRusticanathesixthMonteCarloChallengetherstRallyoftheTestsatBlackpoolLeJogonwhichheandJohnHefferwontheteamprizeandinsixClassicMarathons.HealsotookpartintheKopHillClimbandhisamazingrecordallowedhimtosaythathehadsuccessfullynishedeveryeventhehadeverentered.AtonetimeJanownedTHIRTEENdifferenttypesofclassiccarsandmotorbikes.Goodnessknowshowhecrammedthemallintoatwocargarage.Janhadaverywell-tunedsenseofhumourandcouldbereliedontolightenanyoccasion.HewasalsoacreatureofhabitafullEnglishbreakfasteverymorningnevermissedthe9.45amDailyServiceandrarelymissedhiseveningpintat9pm.Thisritualdidntstopevenwhenhewasdiagnosedwithaperforatedthroatandcouldnoteatordrinkproperly.HestillwenttothepubeacheveningbutjustpouredhispintofbeerthroughafunneldownhisnasogastrictubeAshisdaughtersaidWealwaystriedtofollowinDadsfootstepsbuttheyalwaysledtothepubEventheseverewinterof2013couldnotdefeathimJanwasmarriedtohissupportivewifeJennyfor50gloriousandhappyyears.AthisfuneralpackedtooverowingwithfriendsfromalloverEuropewewereremindedhowoftenpeoplewouldturntoJanforhelpandneverbeletdown.JanwasatrueGentleman.Therecanbenonerepitaphthanthat.Tribute
