Other Dates Jan 30 Annual Dinner Dance Awards Ceremony 2 Classic Touring Car Racing Club Chairmans Chat I am wondering where the year has goneI think time passes more quickly the older one gets I believe it was Jeremy Clarkson who came up with the explanation that a year is a smaller proportion of your life when you are 50 than when you are 5 so it stands to reason it seems to pass much more quickly With that in mind Christmas is almost upon us and once the New Year has been seen in and weve all behaved badly at the awards bash the new race season will be upon us. It will come round more quickly than you think I have already had my MSA licence renewal through you have been warned Dont leave your race car preparation to the last minutecheck the dates on your seatharnessclothing because you can put them on your Christmas list.Take a look on line and see if there have been rules changes be prepared. The 2015 season has not been without its challengesthe calendar had some great circuits on it again but in places some events were very close to each other and combining grids has not been without its difculties. The committee and particularly your Competitions Secretary have worked hard over the last few weeks to put together a calendar that will improve on last years it will incorporate your favourite circuitswill be better spaced out through the year and will again provide you with value for money in what continues to be a difcult economic climate. However most of all I hope it will give you the opportunity to continue to enjoy your motorsport with our club. I also want to take this opportunity to thank those who stepped forward in 2015 to help with some of the many different aspects of running your club and I am delighted that more offers of help have been forthcoming recentlythus I am condent the committee will be back to full strength very soon and ring on all cylinders again for the 2016 season Competition Secretarys Notes Another great years racing has come and gone in the blink of an eye. One moment the cars are parked on the grid at a wet and windy Silverstone the next they are pulling into parc ferm after their nal race of the year at Thruxton. This year has been a great year for the clubthe welcome addition of the VW Challenge and the Pre 2003 Championship has brought some much needed new blood to the club. I regret to inform you that Autoglym has parted ways with the club after ve years of sponsorship.I would like to personally thank them for all their help. I am sure this is not the last time we will be working with them and wish them all the best for the future. However this year has seen some stand-out meetings and the club is heading in the right direction with regards to gird sizes in other championships.Overall driving standards have improved and trips to the stewards ofce have become very few and far between. I am pleased to announce the continuation of the BARC discount scheme for the whole of the 2016 session. 25 Cars 25 DISCOUNT 30 Cars 50 DISCOUNT 35 Cars 75 DISCOUNT I am also currently working on a combined membership to BARC and the CTCRCthis is proving slightly challenging to achieve as the BARC membership runs for 12 months from the joining date and the clubs runs from January to December. I will update you via hot news if and when a deal is agreed. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the club will be returning to Cadwell Park in May and this will be our annual festival which will hopefully be televised. You voted for Cadwell Park to return to the calendar in the survey and we listened Finally with the continuation of the discount schemeand some extremely competitive pricing for meetingsthe CTCRC is becoming one the cheapest ways to go saloon car racing in the UK.With this in mind we are expecting a bumper year for the club in 2016I look forward to seeing you all at the annual dinner dance on the 30th of January. CLUB NEWS SEASON REVIEW 16 Classic Touring Car Racing Club Hello to everybody at CTCRC My name is Andrew Anderson Smith. I am 74 years young and a little bit lively I currently run and live in a pub in Maccleseld Cheshire. On my 73rd birthday my son Andy Smith VTec Direct paid for a track day for me at Castle Combe. He trusted me with his Honda Accord H22 race car which I was able to drive around the track. That was it... Seed and bug sown. I did rather well according to a guy called Phil Wright no. 31 VTec Challenge and so the story began. I bought a little battered Honda CRX with trailer for less than 3000 which I gave to the capable hands of VTec Direct who pampered it and transformed it into a race car albeit not the quickest because a piece between the seat and steering wheel needed somewhat of a tweak... VTec is good but not that good My next job was to obtain an MSA Competition License starting with a full medical followed by ARDS and then the license. For anybody just starting out at the ripe old age of 73 a little help was needed and that is just what I got from the CTCRC members. Licence in hand it was time for a racing suit helmet gloves boots re resistant underwear and balaclava It was nally race day First race of my life and rst race of the 2015 season at Silverstone and what a wet cold and windy weekend it was I don not know how others felt in their very rst race especially given the weather conditions but I just did not want the race to nish despite being lapped by the bigger Feature Andrew Anderson Smith faster cars. It was truly exhilarating just being there in the race. I went on from that rst race day and became better and more condent in myself and the car starting and nishing every race in the 2015 season and went on to win the Pre93s Championship. Over 40 years later the club continues to evolve and adapt with grids that span every decade from 1950 to 2005 with as diverse an entry list as any club could dream. Entry level near-standard road car racing in the form of the Pre-05 championship through to the full-blown fury of Thunder Saloons and most things in between mean that whether you have a Morris Minor or a thousand horsepower of supercharged lunacy there is a grid to suit all tastes whilst genuine touring cars of yesteryear make an occasional thunderous appearance. The CTCRC groups its championships according to the age of the car with period modications permitted. The aim is to recapture the spirit and spectacle of each grids era. Period livery is commonplace and faithful recreations of legendary cars run alongside homebrew machinery in good-natured though erce competition. Budgets as in all series vary but careful regulation has created a balance of machinery which allows drivers of dissimilar cars to exploit the strengths of each. Close clean racing and good driving standards attract a loyal core of competitors and regular live television coverage. A class structure in each championship ensures thatwhatever youre racing everyone has an equal chance at the overall crownthough it is common to see cars from several classes vying for the outright win at any meeting. An invitation class and discounted weekend club membership allows newcomers to try their hand before committing to the championship. Grouped according to age the grids retain a very distinct identity. The CTCRC Today The Pre-66 category is a riot of Lotus Cortina and Anglia both apparently in competition for who can generate the wildest oversteer angles on historic-spec rubber whilst the ubiquitous Mini an ever-present threat and a clutch of wild Morris Minors add period insanity to a grid that seems to manage to maintain that all-important sense of fun amidst the otherwise-intense combat. Rare machinery abounds here and it says much for the standard of driver that irreplaceable cars can be campaigned at even the tightest circuits. The Pre-83 grid offers an eclectic mix of Group 1 machinery dominated by classic battles between raw horsepower and nimble handling. The brute force of big Jaguar faces the balletic oversteer of Mark 1 Escort Dolomites dance with the screaming Capris Droopsnoot Firenza By Andrew Harrison 20 Classic Touring Car Racing Club faces off against the V8s of Rover SD1 or the bestial Camaros in a series that pits mostly old-school rear wheel drive power against the handling of some legendary machines with fortunes that vary circuit by circuit unpredictably so and cars separated by inches rather than feet with no result ever assured. The Pre-93 championship shows a marked step up in sophistication in keeping with that decade of furious development. Greater freedom of modication reects the leap in technology and this grid of golden era touring car racing is well supported. The M3 BMW and Sierra Cosworth are mainstays of the series but competition is broad and diverse and see Starion Jaguar a broad spectrum of BMW Tomcat Renault 5 Turbo Fiesta and others all doing battle in what often proves to be the tightest eld in the CTCRC. Treaded tyres most often the usual suspects of A048 888 and V700 are the rubber of choice for both 83 and 93 grids. The Pre-03 series is new for 2015 but has been a success and wildly competitive from the rst race. A careful set of rules and slick tyres makes for a fast balanced but competitively priced grid. Honda Civic Type R faces Integra as the mainstay of this series with a variety of new cars in production as this series expands race by race. Rear wheel drive is the exception rather than the rule but the pace of development in this series is already intense and most of the top drivers are front-wheel converts for this season. The 03 grid also incorporates the Classic VW Challenge. The challenge is the brainchild of Ken Lark who has raced a Corrado for over 12 years in various championships and Ian Fowler who has worked in everything from single seaters to the BTCC. Some of the older VWs are beautiful cars but cannot keep pace with development or more modern cars being introduced to established championships. This series dedicated to older cars gives them a competitive environment in which to race. Pre-05 are the entry-level cars perfect for both novice and experienced racers alike. Low cost and very limited modication to the cars allows a newcomer with very little budget to be right amongst the action from their rst race. This series is true entry-level motorsport with the emphasis on competition. Clios and Peugeot 206s are the car of choice though with BMW Minis also making an appearance and the series winner for 2014 a humble Proton. Joined now by the Hyundai Coupe Cup the 05 grid has swiftly made a name for itself and has hosted rising stars from the BTCC grids as they cut their teeth in car racing. BOSS are the Blue Oval Saloon Series anything with a Ford badge in any level of modication from standard to sheer insanity slick rubber and big turbochargers in relatively lightweight cars make this a fearsomely-fast highly competitive championship and perhaps the only place you will see a front wheel drive Fiesta going nose to tail with highly-tuned Sierra Cosworth. Extensive modication is commonplace and the standard of preparation is very high but competition amidst the more recognisable affordable roadgoing-class machinery is perhaps even ercer with evenly matched machinery slugging it out in the mid-pack for championship honours. The big boys in this series are the Thunder Saloons where horsepower is measured in how many hundred more you have than standard. Vast modication to these re-breathing leviathans sees big engines and huge power ght slick tyres big wings and splitters to produce the fastest racing of the weekend. 7 litres of Ford Falcon brute displacement faces turbocharged Impreza and Skyline sophistication in the battle for supremacy in the only racing category here that can compete with the trucks for raw brute power. For instant entertainment just add rain. The structured grids allow the club to permit older cars to join in with heavily discounted second third or fourth races by joining newer grids. A Pre-66 car can in theory appear on the Pre-83 or Pre-93 grid a BOSS car could choose to join Thunder to accumulate vast racing mileage in a single weekend at low cost a popular and well-used facility that most drivers take full advantage of. Whilst the grids are diverse the common theme with the Classic Touring Cars is one of camaraderie the racing is erce but the paddock is welcoming the bar is always full the days racing ends with a club- sponsored barbeque as drivers swap war stories. Its the only club where you will see a Camaro a Mini a Skyline and a racing truck parked next to one another and four Capris in period colours falling down Paddock Hill in formation oversteer. The quality of car and competitor is one the club is rightly proud of and 2016 is already shaping up to be a classic year of classic touring car action. 21The Flyer MEMBER FEATURES My name is Alex Tait and I am a 17-year- old disabled racing driver. My rst encounter with motorsport was at the age of 9 at Donington Park watching BOSS GP when I was moved to tears at the sight and sound of the classic F1 cars. My rst experience of driving was at the same age in a Ferrari 360 using a booster seat to reach the pedals. I was so determined to drive I would try anything. Since then I have been crazy about driving and motorsportin 2013 I won a scholarship for disabled drivers to compete for a season in autosolos and autotests.Due to a hereditary muscle wasting condition called Myotonic Dystrophy I was eligible to take part in the competitionit made me a lot more determined to do something that I love and I took part in the Ginetta Junior scholarship. There was three parts to the scholarship assessment driving media and tness I had some very good scores in my driving and mediawhich was the highest on the day but I unfortunately didnt get a place in the nal.Once I had my rst taste of circuit racing I realised that it was something I really wanted to continue taking part inso I took my ARDS test and passedthen I chose BRSCC Fiesta Junior Feature Alex Tait Sheeld 0114 358 6178 Leeds 0113 209 3134 Nottingham 0115 971 7609 Envirotec Hygiene Services provide a rst class discrete service to cater for all your hygiene services washroom services and clinical waste disposal needs along with bird infection and pest control services. A reason that Im looking at racing with the club is because I think that it will give me the best experience and it will teach me a lot more race-craft due to my limited racing career. From what I have seen the club has an ethos of wheel- to-wheel action packed and exciting racing like you would see in the BTCC but without the extensive damage. In 2015 I completed my rst full season in the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship with Specialized Motorsport which runs in association with Finsport. Due to a mechanical issue at the beginning of the season I was unable to take part in the rst race of the season. Since then I have focused on scoring consistent points and working my way up the grid. At the end of the season I ended up 7th overall and 4th in the rookie championship not bad to say going into the second round I had no points. But I fought my way up the grid and it was only because of a bit of bad luck that denied me 3rd in the rookies and 6th overall. I am really looking forward to racing with a club that is so warm friendly and inviting and I cant wait for the next season to start with my team Finsport and with my team mates Dawn Boyd and Gareth Broadbent.the club has an ethos of wheel-to-wheel action packed and exciting racing 22 Classic Touring Car Racing Club OCCUPATION - Vehicle Inspector in vehicle salvage working for ASM Auto Recycling one of the UKs biggest and leading vehicle dismantlers. 2015 Season After a pretty poor season with Bluey the blue and yellow Sierra RS Cosworth raced in Thunder Saloons and BOSS we decided that we would look at building a new more powerful engine to take on the more powerful cars we compete against. That was until we heard about the new Pre 03 Championship which was being launched. After a few phone calls and conversations with my dad Craig we had a look around for a car and it seemed we could buy a whole car for less than the cost of the new engine Originally we looked at a DC5 Integra but we could not come to an agreement on price So the hunt continued and we stumbled upon two EP3 Civic Type Rs on eBay both owned and raced by a father and son.... The Rest is History Over the winter of 2014 we painted improved rebuilt and upgraded and the BTCC replica Civic was born. The car was painted Christmas eve We didnt know a thing about Hondas the only experience we had was my dad owning Honda motorbikes back in the old days It was going to be an interesting season and what happened was something I never thought would happen and would of laughed if you had said it to me at the start of the season. Not only was it a new car to learn but I had the transition from RWD to FWD and turbo charged to naturally aspirated. It was a huge learning curve and with only one track day at Rockingham in the cold wet damp and a small bit of dry running it was errrr interesting Feature AJ Owen We went to Silverstone the rst race of 2015 not really knowing what would happen or how fast we would be. As it turned out we were fast very fast and had it not been for my driving error we would of taken two overall race wins instead of the one. We continued our winning run at every single circuit apart from the season nale at Thruxton. The season highlight being the pole position and double win at Mallory Park as well as race two in the monsoon rain at Brands Hatch. The in-car footage is crazy Fourth overall was our lowest position at Snetterton with a broken shock absorber. To win eight races be the only Pre 03 driver to beat and win the combined races with the CBT VWs on more than one occasion was brilliant to achieve. And of course to be crowned VTec Direct Pre 03 Touring Car Champion is something I will never forget along with the celebrations with my family on the Saturday night at Thruxton. Our Other race cars are 2x Sierra RS Cosworths Ex BTCC Ford Mondeo The Mondeo has raced in the CTCRC but unfortunately had a bad crash at Mallory a few seasons ago. It is chassis number 93 002 and was originally RWD but due to the Mondeo being off the pace in RWD form Andy Rouse and his team transformed the car to FWD in just 36 hours. It was used as a test car and a spare car and used by Paul Radisich in numerous BTCC races. We found the Mondeo on eBay of all places. Unfortunately it does not run the V6 as the cost of building it is over 30000. However we do have the Ford Probe V6 which they used ready to be built should we ever win the lottery to be crowned VTec Direct Pre 03 Touring Car Champion is something I will never forget 23The Flyer MEMBER FEATURES My journey into the world of club racing began nine years ago. Leaving school fresh faced with an interest in motorsport I embarked on a motorsport engineering college course. On this course we needed a project a scan through the newspaper classieds brought up a cheap and simple E30 BMW. Rear wheel drive classic styling a do-er upper. What more could I want So began the stripping purchasing shiny bits and hey presto a track car in the loosest possible sense. It wasnt much to look at but I had my own gateway into racing. Then life sort of took over working hard and forging a career as a race mechanic. Fast forward a few years and it was time to take my knowledge and experience and apply it to my old BMW. A two year rebuild and tidy up began new roll cage engine suspension brakes safety equipment plus the obligatory weight saving. Finally after all the hard work time money sweat tears and laughter I had something that I could go out there and race in. I chose the CTCRC Pre 93 because I had a couple of friends already in the club and I liked the look of the good clean racing. Also at the time there were other classic BMWs like mine and that was the rubber stamp. Donington Park was to be where I popped my cherry. No longer would it be me strapping another driver into a car and sending them on their way. This was my turn.As a mechanic I have taken world level GTE and F1 cars through scrutineering but nothing was more nerve racking than taking my own through for the rst time. All passed and through it was time to queue up and head out for qualifying. Having never driven any circuit other than Castle Combe and a couple of aireld days it was great to experience another track. Thankfully the weather was on my side and it was dry. A steady 15 minutes followed my qualifying was completed and all I now had to focus on worry about was the start of the race. Needless to say as those lights went out I was a tad nervous and a lapse in concentration saw me change from 1st to 4th gear. I cant confess to being overly upset about this as it meant I could take the rst corner at my own pace and not worry about other people being around me. To my surprise I quickly caught up a tussling pair from the Pre 83 championship we were sharing a grid with. Whilst following them the track day ethos was in my mind dont drive Feature Richard Harrison I clambered out of my car with such an immense feeling of achievement and satisfaction too close no overtaking in the corners etc. which sounds odd but it was at this moment the realisation sank in that I can go for these moves and we are RACING that was an exciting moment personally. I wasnt following them for long before they had a coming together in front of me with one of the cars spearing across the front of me eek. Thankfully every one carried on there was no drama and I had gained two places. A quiet couple of laps followed and I found myself catching up another Pre 83 car. A big brutish 3.5L powered Rover. Power it had in abundance however its cornering looked rather a handful for the driver. My car being the opposite low powered but nimble made for an in my opinion incredibly exciting nal couple of laps. I couldnt believe that in my rst race I could have this much fun. Total respect between drivers and certainly the most fun you can have with your cloths on. After the cool down lap we all pulled up in parc ferm and I clambered out of my car with such an immense feeling of achievement and satisfaction. My family there to greet me at the fence with refreshments they were beaming as well. The parc ferm enclosure is also a great place to have a bit of a mingle with the other drivers and go and nd the chaps I had been racing. It was great to chat to them and compare and talk about the race we had just had. Work commitments meant that I have been limited on the amount of events I could do in 2015 however I am planning to do many more races next year and continue competing with the fantastic CTCRC crowd 24 Classic Touring Car Racing Club WaXoyl high PreSSure SPrAyer Simple fast effective coverage in conjunction with the 2.5Ltr Waxoyl pressure can Offers a continuous pressured spray with on off button for added control Simple pump action to gain desired pressure for application Includes extension probe for those awkward to reach areas PreSSure cAn An all purpose reusable high pressure vessel container for use with the Waxoyl High pressure sprayer Available in Black Clear 2.5Ltr Refillable from 5Ltr refill cans Schutz For use with a Schutz coating gun and applied via a compressor Available in Clear and Black 1Ltr. I wasnt sure what to expect and was very apprehensive at a very wet and windy Silverstone. Nothing quiet prepares you for that rst race lined up on the grid a baptism of re. You only start to learn from that moment on. This season has been about learning to drive the car and learning the tracks. The support from everyone has been fantastic and a big thank you to Gary Parkes for some great tuition. Not only have I enjoyed the antics on the track with Jeff Windsor and Damon Craig but the socialising in between races. What a great set of people involved in the club. Ive also come to realise its not as simple as it looks. I think the highlight of the season has to be Snetterton for the atmosphere and probably my best racing of the season. Looking forward to some great races in 2016 and hopeful mixing it up with a few cars as I get more competitive. The club is heading in the right direction and Im glad to be part of the future. The rst meeting of the year at Silverstone was very much a test session for us having only done a handful of shakedown laps around our local Snetterton circuit the race weekend would be the rst time I would really get to see what the car is capable of and how competitive we would be against some really strong competition. The truth was everyone at Luke Allen Racing was pretty chuffed to line up P2 in class on the grid for Race one. The lights went out and the 2015 race season was all go as we piled in to Copse for the rst time. Chasing the P1 hard and setting some quick laps the car just came alive when all of a sudden no power. Obviously I feared the worst as I the whole club felt very welcoming and all had very kind comments about our Honda coasted across the grass on to the ineld but fortunately it was just a fuel sensor tripped out. With that sorted we started to get ready for race two starting from the back of the grid it was never going to be easy and with the rain falling it was more damage limitation mode just to get some miles on the car. We went to round 2 at Castle Combe and this is where our season really started. The car was race ready and we had some slick tyres tted for this event too. Pole Race 1 Win Race 2 2nd. What a fantastic weekend This would be just the start of a great season with 10 podiums including four wins. Its difcult to appreciate how much effort we all put in to racing the stresses and strains we put ourselves through just for that 15 minutes of pure adrenalin. But credit goes out to every single person in the paddock this year whether youre a spanner guy tea maker or the drivers because at my rst ever race meeting a guy told me just to get to the circuit on a race weekend is a massive achievement in itself So congratulations all round So from our 2015 experiences I couldnt recommend coming out to race with the CTCRC enough. Great people Great Circuits Great racing. What more could the club racer want from a weekend away track side We will be back out for 2016 in the Pre 2003 Championship as I sit here and write this I can see the clocking ticking down to the rst race weekend of 2016 so I will leave you all to it 26 Classic Touring Car Racing Club Suspension Parts DEVELOPED FOR THE ROAD PROVEN ON THE TRACK HIGH PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION PRODUCTS Benefits of fitting SuperPro Precision engineered for an exact fit Long life low maintenance No component modifications required Improved handling and stability No increase in vibration and road noise Increased tyre and suspension life All bushes come with SuperPros unique three-year 36000-mile guarantee SuperPro bushes provide a precise feel through corners more responsive steering and greater stability under braking and acceleration attributes make them ideal for cars used on road and track. Judging by the comments I have heard everyone seems to like it. Now that the Civic is racing we will now turn our attention to the next project race car an original 1967 Austin A40 Mk2. I am not really a classic car man I have always liked the modern era hot hatches. But there was something about watching BTCC star Andrew Jordan hustle his A40 around the sweeping curves of the Goodwood circuit. I just had to build one to race The project is under way and we are hoping to be building the car alongside racing the Civic with possible outings mid season with the Pre 66 guys. The car is stripped now with a list of bits to weld as with the Honda build there will be no half measures here. 27The Flyer T H E O L D E R W E G E T T H E B E T T E R YO U L O O K .
